Observing My Child ~ Communication Skills

Discuss the child you are observing in terms of his/her communication skills. Make sure to include the age of your child. Consider both expressive and receptive language. Also consider normative scales. Is your child "on target", ahead, or delayed. How does your child communicate? Does he/she use words, gestures, sounds, baby sign language? Lots of detail please.

As you respond to others/ posts please give tips on how to increase language by use of games, finger plays, books, etc. When you write your final domain summary of your child you may want to include this information and hopefully the comments and the suggestions given to you my your peers will be helpful. If you are working with an infant they certainly communicate as well...tell us about how.

Please read Chapter 4 do Notes and Terms and answer the following questions.
1.  Name and briefly describe the 3 stages of labor ~
2.  Sensitive care can help preterm infants recover, but they are less likely than full term newborns to receive such care.  Why?
3.  List factors discussed in this chapter and in chapter 3 that increase the chances that an infant will be born underwieght.  How many of these factors could be prevented by better health care for the expectant mothers?
4.  Reflect ~ Many people object to the use of extra-ordinary medical measures to save extrememly low-birth-weight babies because of thier high risk for persistent, serious developmental problems.  Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
5. Reflect ~ Are newborns more competent than you thought they were before you read this chapter? Which of their capacities most surprised you? Why?
6.  Explain how persisting postpartum depression seriously impairs children's development.

Carrying a Baby on your Back

People have been strapping babies to their bodies for thousands of years.  In Somalia, women tie their babies securely to thier backs with long, colorful scarves.  In Nepal, mothers carry thier babies in a garment that also holds money and tools, the Inuit people of the Canadian Arctic can snuggle thier babies in furry linings of their parkas.  In this country, active parents take infants shopping and hiking in various types of slings or backpack carriers.  Researchers have found that stimulating experiences such as exposure to sounds, smells, and colors, actually help infants' brain connections grow.  

Write up~ "Wearing" a baby protects him/her from danger and promotes bonding.  What other purposes might it serve?  How do you think "wearing" a baby affects the development of an infant?  Give at least 3 examples.  How does being carried change a child's view of and interaction with the world?

Chapter 3 ~ Infants and Children

Please do notes and terms for Chapter 3.  Once you have review the chapter and taken notes please answer the following questions.
1. Why is the period of the embryo regarded as the most dramatic prenatal phase?  Why is the period of the the fetus called the "growth and finishing" phase?
2. Senario ~ Your friend Amber is two months pregnant, she wonders how the embryo is being fed and what parts of the baby have formed. "I don't look pregnant yet, so does that mean not much development has taken place?" she asks.  How do you respond to Amber's questions?
3. Senario ~ It is your job to promote healthy prenatal development what three environmental influences would you publicize to educate expecting parents and why?
4. List psychological factors during pregnancy that predict parenting effectiveness after childbirth.
5. Reflect ~ As you are nearing adulthood reflect on how you see your parents and their parenting.  Are they loving, caring parents, or cold and distant?  Are they stearn and unfair, to they treat you with respect?  What kind a parent do you want to be?  What is important for you to provide for your children? Explain.

Brain Enrichment Box

Select a theme (ex: ocean, outer space, sports, dogs, holidays, insects, flowers, etc) and create an enrichment box for preschool children by gathering ten different stimulating objects. They must include items that encourage a child’s growth in these areas of development: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, art, music, and dramatic play. Students then implement the box with a toddler and also share with their class. At the conclusion of the project, the students self-evaluate the box and write a short reflection based on their observation and interaction with the child as they explore the box..

The Role Of Fathers in Childrearing ~

Thinking about parents: what role should father's perform? Please be very specific. Think in terms of pregnancy, childbirth and raising infants and toddlers. Give several examples of what a dad should do as well as examples of dad's who parent well.

Montessori and Waldorf Field Trip

Now that we have visited a Montessori, Waldorf, and a public elementary school (last year) please compare and contrast the three. Talk about how you felt in each place, comfort level, etc.  What did you notice about how each place was set up, decor, paint, etc..?
What did you enjoy the most from each place?  What did you like the least about each? 
In your own teaching what would you take from each of the styles of teaching you saw to enhance your own teaching?

Diapering or Hand Washing Procedure Display

Please choose either Diapering or Hand Washing Procedure and create a display to hang in WTG.  This display should include the procedure and illustrations so that children can understand each step.  See me if you have questions.

Hand Washing Write Up ~

1.  Analyze how the child care environment supports or challenges hand washing procedures.
2. Your assessment of how the developemental age of the children in the hand washing assessment can support and challenge hand washing procedures.
3.  Two activities you can do with children tht will help support regular and effective hand washing procedures.
4. List 10 circumstances during the course of the day that a child or teacher in a licensed center must wash his/her hands and why.

Diapering Write Up

1.  Do the VT State Regulations regarding diaper changing align with the diaper changing policy posted in WTG? Why or Why not?
2.  Identify a credible source on the internet for information on at least one disease that can be spread through imporper diapering procedures.
3.  List 5 ways a 12 month old toddler can help with diapering procedures. 
4.  Describe in writing why it is not appropriate for a teacher, about to change diaper, to say the following: "Yuck! you are stinky and messy and I don't want to be the one to change your diaper!"

How did __________ learn to parent or about child development.

Not all students are as fortunate as you to study child development before having a child or working with children. For instance your parents, grandparents and other adult aquaintances may have acquired knowledge about parenting and child development from other sources such as their parents, books, and peers.
Ask your parents, grandparents and others where they got information about caring for a child and child development, how did they learn about caring for children. You may also want to ask them about what changes they have seen in how parents raise their children.  What brought about these changes?

You will also be asked to post this on CCV moodle as well so you should write up your answers in either word or google docs share it with me and paste it to moodle ( you should only need to do the write up once!)

If you are interested in an extra credit assignment her is an option.  Read the Article Reaching Jordan located in the second drawer down on the podium.  After reading the article right a 1 page reflective response to the article.  This response should include a summary of the article, followed by your thoughts on what you read and finally a conclusion.

Multiple Intelligence ~ What does it all mean?

1. Traditionally, people have defined someone who is intelligent as an individual who can solve problems, use logic to answer questions, and can think critically.  Compare this traditional idea about intelligence with Gardener's.  How have his ideas changed the way we asses the strengths and weaknesses of people?
2. One criticism of Gardener's Theory is that he classifies talents as a type of intelligence.  Critics might say that a talented dancer or chess player is not necessarily smart.  How would you reply to this criticism?
3. Does it matter if we call special abilities "Talents" or "Intelligences"?
4. How does an understanding of multiple intelligences change how you view your own abilities?  How will this know affect your schooling, life, you work with children or people?

Know that you have brainstormed all the questions you have about college choose a few of your most important questions and list them on your KWL chart.  Using the list of colleges given to you choose 3 to 5 to visit at the college fair and ask your questions.  Write what you learned on the KWL chart.
