Please read Chapter 4 do Notes and Terms and answer the following questions.
1. Name and briefly describe the 3 stages of labor ~
2. Sensitive care can help preterm infants recover, but they are less likely than full term newborns to receive such care. Why?
3. List factors discussed in this chapter and in chapter 3 that increase the chances that an infant will be born underwieght. How many of these factors could be prevented by better health care for the expectant mothers?
4. Reflect ~ Many people object to the use of extra-ordinary medical measures to save extrememly low-birth-weight babies because of thier high risk for persistent, serious developmental problems. Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
5. Reflect ~ Are newborns more competent than you thought they were before you read this chapter? Which of their capacities most surprised you? Why?
6. Explain how persisting postpartum depression seriously impairs children's development.

1. Early Labor- Longest but least intense. Your cervix will dilate and you will begin to thin out.
ReplyDeleteActive Labor- Contractions will grow stronger. You should be in the hospital at this point.
Transitional Labor- Shortest but most intensive. Your cervix will dilate its final 10 centimeters.
2. Because usually preterm babies weren't cared for in the womb by the mother.
3.Not enough nutrients in the mothers body or smoking. A doctor could easily make sure that the mother is getting the nourishment she needs for the baby to grow.
4. I agree and disagree. I agree to the extent that the child is not going to live a good life and may well end up being a vegetable or will never be able to live normally. But if there is a chance that a baby could pull through I do think medical care should be offered.

1.Early Labor-is the longest but not as intense as the other stages your cervix moves to the anterior position, softens and effaces (thins) and begins to dilate. Active Labor- Your contractions will get a little stronger,and you should go to the hospital. Transitional Labor- is considered the shortest, when the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 centimeters. Your contractions will be VERY strong at the point.

3.Drinking or smoking,drugs and poor diet can reduce nutrients in the mothers body therefore the baby cant grow.
4.I agree if their is a chance that the baby will end up having a good long life,And disagree if the baby is going to be a vegetable.
