Activity - Art Lessons - On page 148 in our text there are some discussion questions. Take a look at the last question #5. Visit your local library, visit amazon.com, do a web search, raid your teacher's bookcases and your own and look at some of these volumes and others that you feel have wonderful illustrations, paintings,collages,etc. Pick three books and build a lesson plan (activity) around each.
VCCICC - Engaging a child in Conversation. Review Criteria for assessment, read the chapters in the Developmentally Appropriate Practice that apply to the age of the child you are going to work with during the assessment and complete write up. (see below)
Engaging a Child in Conversation:
1. Your informal assessment of the child's interest, temperament and strengths based on your
conversation.
2. Activities you can identify that will build on this child's interests.
3. How the age of the child and how your understanding of the cognitive and social development
of a typical child of this age influenced your strategy to engage the child in conversation.
4. How the environment that you were in supported or challenged your ability to engage in
conversation.

The Hidden Forest By Jeannie Baker
The story is about a boy named Ben who loses his fish trap in the ocean and asks his friend Sophie to help get it back. Ben and Sophie end up spending time exploring the ocean and Ben gains a better respect for the animals in the ocean.
The colored drawings in the book looked very realistic. You could tell the people were people and that the ocean was the ocean. Also, the pictures were colored with accurate colors like the ocean was blue and seaweed was green.
Activity: The children would think of something they did with a friend like if they went to the beach. Then they would draw what they did and make it look realistic. They would learn to color things like the way they actually look. Like the ocean would be blue and sand would be tan and the sky and a lighter blue. This activity would help the children put what they actually see on paper rather than what they don’t see.
Pancakes,Pancakes! By Eric Carle
The story is about a boy named Jack who collects all the ingredients in order to make pancakes with his mother.
When you look at the pictures in the book it looks like the things in the pictures were created by cutting different colored pieces of paper and putting them together to form images.
Activity: The children would make a picture out of something they like doing with a parent like fishing or cooking. They would create the picture by taking pieces of colored paper and putting them with other colored papers and making an image with only the colored paper nothing else.
Into the A,B,Sea By Deborah Lee Rose
The story is about how there is a sea animal for each letter of the alphabet and they all do things like dive,glide and leap.
When you look at the book you see that there is the sea animal on the page and just a plain background that only consists usually of about three colors. The animal is always the biggest object in the picture.
Activity: The children paint a picture of their favorite sea animal. The animal has to be the biggest thing in the painting and the background has to be boring so the focus is on the animal. The painting should use very few colors.
Milos Hat Trick:
ReplyDeleteThis story is about a magiction who is really bad at making magic until he finds a bear and the bear teaches him how to do some stuff, like jump in and out of his hat. When people see this they become popular and have magic shows.
Activity:
For the art activity i would do is have the kids try and make up their own magic trick of what they though was magic, and have them pick a page in the book and draw that page.
10 Minutes Till Bedtime:
The story was a picture book about a little boy that has 10 minutes till he has to go to bed. It shows him doing different things before he has to go to bed.
Activity:
For an art activity i would try to get the kids to think about what they play with before they go to bed and have them draw them playing with a certain toy that they love.
The Cat and The Dog
This story is about a cat and a dog and how they try to play withe eachother.
Activity: For this activity i would have the kids pick out 2 of their favorite animals and have them pain them playing with eachother.
The Hat:
ReplyDeleteThis story is about a little girl who was hanging her clothes up outdoors and one of her sock blew away in the wind and landed on a little hedgehogs head and he couldnt get it off because of his quills and walked around and got laughed at by all the other animals but they thought the hat was pretty cool so they all got pieces of her clothing and then they all had magnificent hats!
Activity:
For an activity for this book I would have the kids decorate their own hats with any art crafts they wanted to use.
In the Tall, Tall Grass:
This book is about what different kinds of bugs and adventures happen in the tall tall grass every day.
Activity:
For an activity for this book I would have the kids go outside and search for things in the grass. Like diferent kinds of bugs, flowers, noises and more.
Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree:
This book is about a family of monkeys going down by the river to have a picnic and the five little monkeys go and tease a crocodile that is in the pond Now there's only one little monkey, sitting in the tree, treasing Mr. Crocodile, "Can't catch me!" and one by one they go missing but they all show up in the end.
Activity:
For an activity I would have the kids act it out like the monkeys did have five kids be monkeys and one of them be the crocodile.
Book: Flower Garden by Eve Bunting. Is a story about a young girl and all about her new garden that she got.
ReplyDeleteActivity: The activity that I would do with this book is bring in a empty windowsill flower bed and then lay out a wide variety of color paper and let the kids create as many different flowers as they want and then place them into the box where they want.
Book: Annie and the Wild Animals By Jan Brett. This book is about Anniewho couldn't find her cat Taffy anywhere so she went out side to look for a brand new friend and met all types of different wild animals.
Activity: The first thing I would do is to make the classroom look like it was covered in snow and then have each kid make their own animal costume it could be a real animal or one they make up that "Annie" would meet along her journey.
Book: If you Give a Moose a Muffin By Laura Joffe Numeroff. This book is about all of the crazy and creative things that would happen if you gave a moose a muffin.
Activity: Have the kids make muffin mix and then use moose shaped cutouts and bake the muffins and then let the kids decorate them how ever they want their moose to look.

Natalie seems to be a very happy child. She likes apples and loves telling you about her family. She seems to talk and express herself very well for her age. Ciara was sick over the weekend but is feeling a lot better now since she took her medicine. Her mom just got a new car that is white. She likes cream cheese but does not like bagels. I think she needs to work on her colors more. Moses likes pineapples. His mom has a white car and his dad has a black car. The kids all seemed very eager to learn new things.

You could do activities regarding colors and foods. You could have a kitchen set up for the kids to play with and learn about different types of foods. You could talk about what color the foods are and organize the foods based on their colors.

The three children I talked to were all around the age of four. I tried to use words they would understand but may challenge their vocabulary a little bit. I tried to find things they were interested in talking about and that would keep them engaged.
4. How the environment that you were in supported or challenged your ability to engage in
conversation.
When I first went into the daycare the children were cleaning up and getting ready for breakfast. This made it difficult to get the children to talk to me since they were all trying to clean and get ready to eat. Since the children were all getting ready for breakfast and were really busy it was hard to get them to talk to me.

The child that I engaged in a conversation with was very willing to talk to me about anything. I talked to her about the food she was eating and tried to see if she could relate her food to other stuff. She is pretty young and didn’t quite know all the stuff that some of the other children did. Although from what I saw she was very willing to learn and talk about anything I brought up.
Activities you can identify that build on this child’s interests
The conversation I had with this child was very short so I wasn’t able to exactly identify her interests because she was having breakfast. However I did talk to her about what was on her plate and I tried to build her understanding on where her food comes from and what other foods related to what was on her plate. An activity that you could do would be to pick foods that you can make into other food and have the child think about what other food you could make with it. For example an apple, you can make apple sauce or an apple pie from apples or you could just eat the apple as it is.

The child was pretty young that I had a conversation with so I decided to talk to her about the food on her plate and try to see how much she knew about different foods and if she knew exactly what the foods she had was called.

The environment that I was in definitely challenged by ability to engage in conversation because they were all sitting down getting ready to eat breakfast so many of the children were distracted with eating. It was really hard to talk to the child because she was trying to focus on her food and the other children were trying to talk to me and answer the questions that I was asking the one child.

Im Mighty by Kate & Jim McMullan - This book is about a small tug boat that pulls aruond the bigger boats showing that small things have a lot of power too. With this book I would have pre-schoolers cut out different size boats from paper and put them in order biggest to smallest.
ReplyDeleteMouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh - This book is about three white mice that get wet with paint and start making a bunch of different colors. I would print off drawings of these mice and give the children paint and see what colors they can make from two different colors.
One by Kathrym Otoshi - This being my favorite childrens book talks to the kids abuot how to stand up to bullying with talking numbers. I would print out numbers one through seven and have the children color them and put them numarical order.
