Re-read pages 64 - 67 in Chapter 2.
Now design some inquiry/play based activities to suit a theme. First determine what subject you are going to question. For example insects - What do we know about insects and what do we want to learn about insects. You will be planning activities that are on a subject for Pre-k and K, grades 1 and 2, and grades 3 and 4. You will need to have activities that are age appropraite with activities for all 3 groups. Some may be appropriate for more them one age group. Each age group should have 4 activies: Functional Play, Constructive Play, Games with Rules, and Symbolic Play. All activities could be tied to your theme (question).

Pre K-K
ReplyDeleteFunctional Play- Have the kids build sand castles, on their own.
Constructive Play- Give the kids different materials and ask them to build beaches.
Games with Rules- Making up a song and dance about beacges and teach it to the kids during circle time.
Symbolic Play- The kids could dress up in beach cltohes such as; towels, sandals, swim trunks, sun hats, etc.
Grades 1-2
Functional Play- Take the kids to the beach to play in the sand and the water.
Constructive Play- Have the kids build their own beaches with blocks and other toys.
Games with Rules- Have a relay race across a beach.
Symbolic Play- The kids could tie dye beach towels or make their own beach hats.
Grades 3-4
Functional Play- Have the kids break into groups of four or five and have them build a big sand castle.
Constructive Play- Make a word search that is all about the beach.
Games with Rules- Have a relay race across a beach where the kids have to run and make a sandcastle with their team.
Symbolic Play- The kids could act out a day at the beach.
Theme- Winter

Functional Play: Play outside with the sand castles and make snow castles.
Constructive Play: Put water colors in a spray bottle and spray different colors in the snow to make different colors.
Games with Rules: Play a winter memory card game.
Symbolic Play: Have elf and reindeer and santa dress up clothes out.
Grades 1-2
Functional Play: Take the kids outside to play in the snow.
Constructive Play: Cut out snowflakes and put 1-20 on them and have the kids put them in order.
Games with Rules: Take winter pictures like snowflakes, mittens, hats etc. and make bingo sheets out of them to play with the kids.
Symbolic Play: Have the kids make little elf hats out of arts and crafts with elf ears to wear on their heads.
Grades 3-4
Functional Play: Go outside and have the kids build snowman.
Constructive Play: Make a winter word search.
Games with Rules: Play hangman with winter words.
Symbolic Play: Play snowman tag, have a child be a snow man and they have to freeze the other kids by tagging them.

Games with Rules: Play a farm animal memory game
Symbolic Play: Have the kids pretend to be their favorite farm animal
1-2
Functional Play: Take a feild trip to a farm
Constructive Play: Cut out the different farm animals and have the kids color them the way they think they should be
Games with Rules:
Symbolic Play: Let the kids have time to play with a farm set, or pretend that they owned a farm
3-4
Functional Play: Have the kids make a farmhouse out of popsicle sticks
Constructive Play: Have different animals layed out with something wrong with each of them and have the kids figure out what was wrong
Symbolic Play: Play a game that involves the kids to be active but also include something to do with the different farm animals
Games with Rules: Play farm monopoly
Theme- Ocean

Functional play- have them make shell necklaces.
Constructive play- Have the kids draw a picture of the ocean and put sand on the paper and shells (things like that)
Games with rules- I would have them play a memory game and have soem of the sea creatures.
symbolic play- have the kids talk as if they were one of the sea creatures.
1-2
Functional play-maybe take a field trip if you live near the ocean but that might be a bit too much for this age group
Constructive play- have the kids build their own ocean.
symbolic play- you could make an activity with plastic sea creatures and put different thing in it too and have them pick out what ones belong in the ocean and which ones dont.
Games with rules-
3-4
Functional play- have the kids color on the sea shells or soemthing like that.
Constructive play- have a bucket of water and have options of all different things and they can put the sea creatures in the water and seperate which onesbelong and which ones dont.
Symbolic play- play and active game that gets the kids active with their favorite sea animal lie maybe have them dress up as their favorite sea creature if they could do that.
Games with rules- have pieces of 3 farm animals cut up and have them put the pieces together like a puzzle

Pre -K and Kidergarten
Functional Play: The kids could sing and dance to a Valentine’s day song.
Constructive Play: The kids could play the “What’s your equation” valentines day math game where is uses Hearts instead of numbers to do addition and subtraction.
Games With Rules: Valentine’s Day Memory Card Game.
Symbolic Play: The kids could dress up in heart and cupid costumes.
First and Second Grade
Functional Play: A tag game where cupid is the tagger.
Constructive Play: Categorizing hearts from biggest to smallest.
Games With Rules: Use heart shaped cards to play Candy land.
Symbolic Play: Kids could design heart and cupid costumes and then dress up in them.
Third and Fourth Grade
Functional Play: Valentine’s Day Obstacle Course. An example would be that the kids have hearts and run and give another kid there heart which they exchange for a flower and then they can go through a tunnel.
Constructive Play: A Hearts math game where kids stick up on the board what number they think is the answer to the problem. The math game would deal with adding,subtracting,multiplying and dividing. The number that they could choose from would all be in heart shapes.
Games With Rules: A Valentine’s Day Crossword.
Symbolic Play: The kids could design a skit involving Valentine’s Day.
Theme: Jungle Animals

Functional Play- The kids can sing songs about monkeys, elephants and other jungle animals.
Constructive Play- Give the kids materials to make a mask of their favorite jungle animal.
Symbolic Play- The kids can use the masks that they made and they can put them on and show how their animal does things.
Games w/ Rules- Play a “duck, duck, goose” game but instead call it “lion, lion, tiger”.
First and Second Grade
Functional Play- Play a ring toss with cardboard cut outs that are standing up in the front of the room.
Constructive Play- Have different jungle animal pictures and have the children organize them in a way that makes since to them.
Symbolic Play- The children can pick a jungle animal and act it out and have their classmates guess what animal they are.
Games w/ Rules- Play a Go-Fish game with jungle animal cards.
Third and Fourth Grade
Functional Play- Have the kids make a model of what they think the jungle looks like and what animals are in it.
Constructive Play- Make a cross word puzzle of jungle animals.
Symbolic Play- The kids could pretend their on a safari and their are different animals around the room hidden and they must find them and identify what they are.
Games w/ Rules- Play a jeopardy game with questions about different animals in the jungles.

Symbolic: Sing Inch By Inch and use movements to act as if they are planting the garden.
Games With Rules: Summer match game
Constructive: Fill buckets, pack down sand, flip over.
Grade 1-2
Functional: Nature walk (compare what they see now and what they might see in winter (differences))
Symbloic/ Games with Rules: Barnyard Pictures
Constructive: Thumbprint art, create summer scene.
Grade 3-4
Functional: Play charades with groups and different summer activities
Symbolic: Barnyard pictures and spelling of words
